This is a really neat site. My dad was an amtrac driver in the Korean War. He was at the Inchon Landing and other battles.

My dad was PJ Saxton ("PJ"), former Marine and one-time commander of the 1st (1971-1972 if my memory serves). He was attached to the 1st as a private back in 1946, right after he completed basic at Camp Pendleton. Dad passed away in October 2013 and we are preparing for his interment in early Feb 2015 at the Punchbowl Cemetery in Hawaii. I'm just on the website today to gather a bit of info about the 1st and thought I'd sign the guestbook. Semper Fi!

I recently read a book about General 'Brute' Krulak with the book giving the General primary credit for the design of the AMTRAC....also said that when MACV wanted an air facility in addition to Da Nang and said it would take a year to construct, Gen. Krulak said it could be up and operating in 30 days...and Chu Lai came into being with combat operations being conducted within the 30 days...must have been quite a Marine

Good day. Thank you for your keen and benevolence in up-keeping this important site.
I served with AmTracs from 1970-1973. I wanted to know if anyone can provide what exact Tracs units while in Okinawa, Feb, 1971 to Feb, 1972 Thank you so much.

With Hq company 1st Amtrac Bn from 11/67 to 12/68. Remember Ssgt Yates well. Bravest marine I ever meet. Also recall the incoming artillery every day during Tet. Also remember the recon units putting white long underwear on to blend in during nite pops to blend into the white sand. I went on numerous patrols as the radio operator. I have been looking for Kenny Belles as we were known as big bubba and little bubba.
